Meet Myles Owen

20090616-024Myles is home! Early last week, we were given permission to bring John Paul home from the orphanage in Kampala.  Though we love that his given name is actually a "family name" for us -- considering we have two Paul's and three John's in our immediate families, we thought we would rename the newest Manry.  Myles is a name we have loved for a long time, and find fitting for a little boy whom we traveled a many miles, both on land and in heart to love.  The Owen Falls on the River Nile in Jinja, where Uganda's first hydro-electric dam was built in 1954, inspires his second name, which means "well born."  Despite the unfortunate circumstances into which Myles was born, God's favor was upon him and us, allowing him to be reborn well into our family. We are thankful.

Watching our children embrace Myles into their lives has been the clearest confirmation that he is intended for our family.  All four children have been involved with the adoption from the beginning, and in many ways prompted us to adopt another child into our home.  They each show their love and care for Myles in their own unique way, and during the first few days have collectively held him as much as or more than me and Lori. Thankfully, Myles seems to enjoy the attention he gets from his new brothers and sisters.

As new parents, Lori and I gaze into our future with Myles with hope and wonder, captivated by the possibilities: What are his God-given gifts? Who will he become?In what ways will he form us as a family?  These questions, which are continually being asked and answered in our life together, are what make parenting a journey of joy and faith.  We shape our children, but our children also shape us!  Myles has already infused imagination into our everyday as we attempt to define our new "normal" as a family of seven.

Our adoption process is far from over, and in some aspects has just begun.  Satisfying the legal requirements of Ugandan, American, and Michigan governments will require much patience and paper-chasing.  We are fortunate to be working, on all of these fronts, with people of great character and integrity, which gives us peace despite the uncertainties associated with international adoptions in Uganda.  We are committed to an adoption process that affirms everyone involved and are thankful to be working with people who share that commitment. Keep all of this in your prayers to our God who has willingly adopted us into his family.
