For those of you who know me well, know that I am easily grossed out. How did I, someone who has a difficult time handling raw chicken in my own kitchen, move to Jinja, Uganda – a far cry from the manicured and clean Rochester Hills of Michigan? Now, I’m not saying that Jinja is a gross place to live. It’s actually very beautiful. In fact, just yesterday I went for a run down Nile Crescent road, a road that runs along the Nile River. I wish I could accurately describe just how beautiful it was. The fact that I am easily grossed out here, says more about me than it does this place! I thought I’d share with you just a few of things that feed this tendency of mine:
-
10 The pile of dirty dishes in my kitchen on Sunday night (The only day someone else doesn’t wash them for me! Yup, I’m getting spoiled)
-
9 The cock roaches in my house – I never see them, but they always “drop” evidence of their presence.
-
8 Everyone’s dirty feet, mine included, but especially Spencer’s after digging in his garden.
-
7 The piles of trash that take up residence on the side of the roads as if a dumpster was there.
-
6 The village choos – I just can’t get used them. A toilet seat, a little plumbing, and the absence of flies is preferred!
-
5 The Jinja Market – which is actually full of lots of things that gross me out! (used bedding and slabs of raw meat, just to name a few)
-
4 The bags full of dead bats, bat droppings and cock roaches that were removed from my attic after fumigating to get rid of them.
-
3 The worm I squeezed out of Lydia Jane’s leg!
-
2 The whole chicken we were served to eat at a local run restaurant on the way home from Safari last week – it still had hair attached to the skin! Suddenly Tyson’s raw, skinless, boneless chicken breasts in my own Michigan kitchen seems a lot less gross!
-
1 The Marabou Storks, aka “trash birds” for they feed all day on the trash dumpsters – a picture is necessary for you to understand just how gross they are!
