Our homeschool year is off to a great start! We chose a curriculum called Tapestry of Grace. For unit one, we will be studying the books of Moses and we begin with the study of Ancient Egypt. We are learning about the people and culture that Moses grew up in and how Ancient Egypt made major contributions to civilizations. Ironically, the Nile River was the first aspect of Egypt that we studied. Well, we just happen to live just a few stone’s throw from this famous waterway. So, Mark and I took the children to the Jinja Nile Resort which overlooks the beautiful Nile River and learned how this ancient river was a gift to both old Egypt and present day Uganda. While we learn about Pharaohs, mummies, pyramids, and the Egyptian’s understanding of afterlife, the children are realizing that as Christians we have the hope of life after death no matter what condition our earthly bodies are in. And even though Egypt was an advanced culture and worth the study of historians, sociologists and archeologists, it was also the most advanced civilization of human pride and accomplishment in its day. As a people, the Egyptians lived in contrast to God’s design for his creation. And so, Egypt became the place where God displayed his power, called his people and began to prepare the world for its Savior!

Check out the great designs the children did this week that displayed their understanding of major landforms such as oceans, rivers, peninsulas, mountain ranges and valleys. They created a salt maps of an imaginary island in the middle of an imaginary sea. Very clever artists I have! Wilson, the son of one of our workers, has been joining us for school. He said our school is way more fun than his Ugandan school  -- Thanks, Wilson!
